An exceedingly rare ceramic goat figurine by the accomplished Hungarian ceramics artist Ágoston Simó (aka Simó Ágoston).  Created out of a wonderfully grainy chamotte clay and delicately detailed in shades of green, gray, blue, white and brown, the figure stands tall at 12.5" x 7.5" wide, and is truly an impressive work of art.

ÁGOSTON SIMÓ (1925-2011) studied at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts from 1943-1949 under ceramics masters:  Miklós Borsos, István Gádor, Elek Molnár and Béla Ohmann.  From 1950 he worked as a designer for the Granite, Stoneware and Porcelain Factory, and between 1952-54 as a designer for the Ceramic Applied Arts Cooperative. He became a freelance artist in 1954.

Over the years Ágoston Simó competed in and won numerous applied arts competitions, and his work has been featured in a number of prestigious group exhibitions as well as two solo exhibitions in the early 1970s.  He also participated in the Siklós Ceramics Symposium in 1972 and 1976. Its scope of activity covers the entire field of ceramics, within which figural sculptures, mural tasks, and tile stoves have played a significant role.  In 1985 he won the Award of the National Association of Hungarian Artists, and the Ferenczy Noémi Award in 2002.  much of his work can be found in public spaces that include a number of schools and offices, as well as theaters, restaurants, and the Budapest Natural History Museum.  He is held in both private and public collections, including the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest.  In addition to being an accomplished sculptor and ceramics artist, He was a six-time county champion of Budapest Forward as a skier (1950-52).  Ágoston Simó passed away in 2011 at the age of 86.
