An original acrylic painting on canvas by Brookline, Mass., artist FREDERIC MICHAEL FAILLACE (1949–2023). The work features clean-edged geometric fields of vibrant red and orange, that emphasize the flatness of the canvas, recalling the style of Piet Mondrian (1872–1974). The deliberately impersonal application of paint exemplifies an important aspect of Minimalism, which emerged as a response to the more painterly techniques of Abstract Expressionism. Notable in much of “Freddie’s” work is the incorporation of negative space; a work-in-progress fractal is potentially suggested here. An estate stamp is located on the reverse side. Unframed.
FREDERIC M. FAILLACE was a 20th-century artist from Brookline, Mass. He attended the New England School of Art at Boston’s Suffolk University. He exhibited at Stebbins Gallery in Harvard Square throughout the ’60s and ’70s—and at MIT in 1993. Very little of Faillace’s work was sold prior to his death; the vast majority came onto the market only as his estate was opened up.
