Blazing impasto riverfront cityscape, executed with a palette knife in a naïve style and fiery autumn colors, by German-born, eastern Pennsylvania artist CHRISTINE BARTH (1920–1992). Barth’s standing practice was to sign her work “C. Kavon”—using her first initial and the ananym of her maiden name, Novak. (Many thanks to the grandson who contacted us online to provide this detail.) Oil on canvas. The frame shows separation at the mitered corners and light staining to the linen liner. Priced “as is.”

CHRISTINE BARTH (1920–1992) emigrated to the US with a toddler son in her early thirties in 1954, having survived the Allied bombing of Hamburg during WWII in which much of her family was lost. A preference for the palette knife had emerged during studies at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK). She maintained a studio at her new home in eastern Pennsylvania and frequently sold work through NYC galleries.
