A modernist still life with an artist’s tools and notebook in oil on canvas. The paint was applied in thick patches using both brushes and a palette knife. In a retreat from all-out cubism, the visual plane is broken into a somewhat regular grid, emphasizing fragmentation over and above abstraction. The biomorphic form of the distorted painter’s palette straddles the resulting framework—perhaps in humorous defiance. Signed indistinctly on the lower right. Presented in a slim, gold-tone frame.
