A shipwreck serves as a grand metaphor for hopeless loss, in this evocative undersea abstraction from Dallas-born artist CHERYL FINFROCK (b. 1961). The more conventional connotations of bright yellow—happiness and joy—are belied by its presence in the ocean depths. Finfrock reminds us that the color can also signify warning and sickness. Detached propellers and a random piece of die-cut machine frame featuring heart-shaped holes are sunk to the ocean floor and surrounded by fleeting air bubbles. Saturated hues are a hallmark of Finfrock’s work in acrylics. Signed and dated at the bottom right.

CHERYL FINFROCK completed her BA in Art and English at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, in 1983. She took graduate classes in sculpture at UTSA in San Antonio, TX. In 1986, she satisfied the requirements for a Texas Teacher’s Certificate in Art Education.
