LEFT-HAND DIPTYCH PANEL BY WILLIS FRANKLIN WOODS (1950s)

The tall left-hand panel of a diptych that was originally titled, in its entirety, Movement, the sophomore work of WILLIS FRANKLIN WOODS (1920-1988), a Washington, D.C., artist and an accomplished museum administrator. A colorful yet sober montage of cubist abstractions, with overtones of Midwest Futurism, the acrylic is a casual jumble of forms. However, its seeming artlessness belies an acuity of execution, with sgraffito and sponging adding textural interest. Williams served in turn as director of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Executive Director of the Seattle Art Museum. From the family’s collection. In a well-built floater frame.
