A beautiful teak and leather Danish Modern lounge chair in the style of Hans Olsen. Still covered in its original, supple, aged black leather upholstery. Very nice patina.
HANS OLSEN (1919-1992) was a native of Denmark. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy under the great Danish architect and designer Kaare Klint (1888-1954) from 1941 until 1943. The classic virtues of his mentor had their influence, but Olsen opted for a more playful and experimental approach to furniture design. He opened a studio in 1953 and began exhibiting work at the Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen to great acclaim.
Olsen's remarkable designs from the period are vivid examples of the beautiful diversity of Danish Modernism. Best known for his innovative use of bent laminated wood–as seen in the iconic Bikini chair (1968)–Olsen’s work features swooping organic curves and the interplay of multiple materials within single pieces. Although never considered a part of the mainstream Danish School, Olsen did produce pieces with several well-known manufacturers, including Bramin Møbler and Juul Kristensen. Today, several of his design classics are collector icons. He died in 1992.
