A Danish Modern drop-leaf cocktail table in beautifully figured rosewood, designed by Henning Kjærnulf in 1975 for VEJLE STOLE OG MØBELFABRIK. With the leaves up, the table measures 71" long—dropped...roughly 49". It is 33 ½" deep and stands 19" tall. This handsome table is in very good vintage condition overall, having only minor blemishes that correspond with its age and use.

VEJLE STOLE OG MØBELFABRIK was established in 1907 in the Danish fjord town of Vejle. It gained an early reputation for producing high-quality, handcrafted furniture using traditional woodworking techniques. During the mid-20th century, the company became known for designs that were heavily influenced by the Danish Modern movement. It produced a wide range of furniture—chairs, tables, sofas, and storage units—characterized by clean lines, simplicity, and the use of natural materials. Much of its output is still coveted by collectors and design enthusiasts today. VEJLE MØBELFABRIK collaborated with a number of prominent Danish designers, Arne Vodder, Johannes Andersen, and Erik Buch, among them.

In the 1980s, VEJLE STOLE OG MØBELFABRIK merged with several other Danish furniture companies to form Skovby Møbelfabrik. Highly regarded today, the firm is known for its production of high-quality furniture using classical methods.

HENNING KJÆRNULF is something of a mystery. A Danish designer and architect from the mid-century era, more seems to be known about his work than the man himself. He mainly designed for Danish manufacturers EG Kvalitetsmobel, Nyrup Møbelfabrik, and VEJLE STOLE OG MØBELFABRIK. The last produced his well-known teak extension dining table; the archives of the Danish municipality of Stenlille mention Kjærnulf’s architectural designs for the Nyrup factory.

Kjaernulf’s pieces reveal quality craftsmanship throughout, featuring clean Danish Modern lines with sculpted edges and forms. Unique shapes, such as his razorblade chair backrests, distinguish him from other Danish designers of the period. Considering of how sought-after his dining sets and lounge chairs are today, it is curious that so little is known about the man.
