MOUNTAINSCAPE BY DILLON HAMPDEN CARRINGTON (1940s)

A kaleidoscopic landscape with a panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains by DILLON HAMPDEN CARRINGTON (1916-1991), executed with a palette knife in oil on Masonite. Cubist distortions transform the cloudy sky into a captivating expanse of Fata Morganas that pile on top of the actual peaks. The Catskills, a subrange of the Appalachians, bewitched the boyhood imagination of Washington Irving, the 19th-century American short-story writer, inspiring his famous gothic tales. Interestingly (and perhaps relatedly), Carrington was himself a noted bibliophile and specialized as a collector of supernatural lore. In a gilded, heavily-carved frame.
