The ruins of a Mid-Atlantic pier at low tide stand as a testament to forgotten storms, brought to life in the saturated hues and expressionistic style of amateur New York watercolorist Frank Gebhart. Vertical pilings are smeared with bright green marine algae. Scattered flotsam—possibly the remnants of a shattered hull—is captured in dry-brush strokes among sparse tufts of dune grass. Executed in the late 1950s on what appears to be handmade cotton rag and affixed to an uncut piece of light-taupe mat board. Presented under glass in its original, weathered frame.
