A large and bulbous stoneware vessel with lid by the German ceramicist Claus Tittmann, This piece has the artist's chop mark and is dated '84' on the bottom. it also comes with the original receipt (450 DEM) and a note from the gallery confirming its authenticity.

Claus Tittmann was born in Leipzig in 1941 and studied at the Academy for Applied Technology (Fachhochschule) in Munich from 1963 to 1973 where he received a Graduate Engineering degree before finding work in industry.  From 1974-75 he attended the State College for Ceramics in Landshut before establishing the foundation of a workshop in Thurnau-Berndorf in 1975.  By 1977 he had completed the construction of a kiln for wood firing salt glazes.  In 1980 he was awarded the Bavarian State Prize (gold medal) for his outstanding contributions in applied art and design by the Bavarian State Government in Germany.  In 1984 he did design work for the Merkelbach stoneware factory iin Höhr-Grenzhausen.  Claus and Julia Tittmann continue to produce works in ceramics and bronze at their studio in Thurnau-Berndorf in Upper Frankonia.
