VETRI MURANO is a trademark that was established in 1981 by the Venice Glass Consortium, an organization of glassmakers on the island of Murano.  Sponsored by the Industrialist Association of the Province of Venice and the Venice Craftsmen's Association, the trademark's use was restricted to companies owning glassworks on the island of Murano—so as to control the authenticity and quality of Murano glass.  It features the words "vetri murano" and the initials "vm" in old-style, lowercase, Italianate letters; the word "murano" is repeated vice versa as if mirrored.

Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking began toward the end of the 13th century when legislation (dated November 8, 1291) confined practically all of Venice's glass industry to the "island of Murano."  (Located less than 2 km off the mainland in the Venetian lagoon, Murano is actually a cluster of islands connected by short bridges.)  Furnaces used to make molten glass posed a great fire hazard, especially in a city filled mostly with wooden structures.  In addition to removing this threat, the law had the effect of isolating the glassmakers and their expertise, thus limiting the spread of Venetian glassmaking technology to competitors.  Glassmakers were allowed to leave the island only with government permission.
