This beautifully grained rosewood sideboard from Danish furniture maker OMANN JUN dates from the early to mid 1960s.  The cabinet is in excellent vintage condition excepting that it was adapted by a previous owner for use as a media center—to wit, a portion of the plywood back was removed to accommodate electrical components [see photo].  (The back could be matched and replaced, but we chose to leave it in "as found" condition thinking since some might appreciate this modification.)  The back is unfinished.

OMANN JUN MØBELFABRIK was founded by Andreas Omann in 1933 in the city of Horsens on the east coast of the Jutland region of Denmark.  The family-run business initially focused on the production of bedroom furniture; later, through the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, it expanded into dining-room furniture, desks, and shelving systems, all made with high-quality woods, such as teak, oak, and rosewood.  Members of the Omann family developed the designs in house, and products were exported worldwide.  (Note Gunni Omann is often attributed as a designer, but he was strictly involved in sales.)

Among collectors, the beautifully constructed sideboards remain OMANN JUN's most sought after pieces.  They feature many of the hallmarks of Scandinavian modernist design, such as beautifully grained surfaces, tapered legs, sliding doors, and beveled edges.  The Models No. 18 (1961) and No. 21 (1965) are exemplars of the style.

OMANN JUN was taken over by Bjarne Omann in 1979 when he inherited the company from his father.  During his time as the head of the company, it produced exclusive furnishings for professional offices.  In 2005, Ulrich Omann took the reins from his father.  Today the company concentrates on the production of contract furniture, including reissues of classics from the mid-century era.  OMANN JUN MØBELFABRIK remains operational today.
