For fans of matte glazes, here is a large and beautiful SCHEURICH floor vase with a nice satiny glaze of muddled red and brown/black with horizontal stripes of beige, tan, and dark brown.
SCHEURICH was founded by Alois Scheurich in Kleinheubachin, Bavaria, in 1954. The prolific designer Heinz Siery joined the firm the following year. Siery developed production techniques as well as designs for SCHEURICH and formulated a strategy of producing a wide array of simple forms that could be decorated in a great variety of glazes. A range of pieces that was both extensive and adaptable resulted. Costs were also kept low. The approach proved a great success; through the 1980’s, SCHEURICH produced more pottery than any other German manufacturer, much of it for export.
Early SCHEURICH ceramics sport relatively discrete colors and geometric patterns. In the late 1960’s and the 1970’s glazes were characterized by brown and green color schemes, sometimes accented with more vibrant hues—but there were also decors that employed the bold lava and volcanic glazes so popular today. Molded decors inspired by ancient cultures or patterns from nature were also represented. By the late 1980's, both shapes and color scales became plainer and the work less attractive.
