‘SHIPWRECK’ BY AUSTIN ARTIST CHERYL FINFROCK (2005)

A shipwreck serves as a grand metaphor for utter loss in this expressive undersea abstraction from Dallas-born painter CHERYL FINFROCK (b. 1961), which features loose propellers, fleeting air bubbles, and a random bit of die-cut machinery. The typical associations of sunny yellow—happiness and joy—are belied by its presence in the ocean depths; Finfrock reminds us that the color can also symbolize stagnation and decay, sometimes even cowardice. The saturated acrylic is characteristic of much of her work. Signed.
